Location of Chail

43 kms from Shimla, Chail is located at a height of 7,054 feet above sea level. Chail is a quite little hill resort away from the maddening crowd of Shimla, Chail the summer capital of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, Chail is built on three hills – Rajgarh Hill, Pandhewa hill, and Sadh Tiba. The Maharaja built his palace on Rajgarh Hill, the British Residency is on Pandhewa hill while there is the Sidh Baba ka Mandir on Sidh Tiba, the third hill.

Places to see in Chail

Palace Hotel: The palace of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was built in 1891 on 75 acres of land with truly regal setting. People come to stay in this palace to get a feel of the royal charm. Even if you are not staying at this Palace, you must pay a visit to this place.

Cricket Ground: The cricket ground laid by the Maharaja, is said to be the highest one in the world standing at a height of 7,218 ft. It is surrounded by deodar and pine trees.

Sidh Baba ke Mandir: This place was originally selected for building the palace but it is believed that a sidh (saint) appeared in his dreams and declared this place as the one where he meditated. So, a temple was eventually built here instead of the palace.

Chail Sanctuary: Chail sanctuary covers a total area of 10,854.36 hectares and is the home of many wildlife animals like ghoral, kakkar, sambhar, red jungle fowl and khalij and cheer. It is a popular tourist spot in Chail.

What to do in Chail

Chail is ideal for short treks and fishing. You can trial to Shimla and Choor Peak and enjoy fishing at Gaura on Giri river, about 29 kms from Chail.

Sadhupul: This is a small village between Kandaghat and Chail across the Ashwani stream. 14kms from Kandaghat, Sadhupul is a popular tourist spot.
