Karnaprayag

Karnaprayag is one of the five confluences of Alaknanda River where it meets with Pindar River. Karnaprayag has got a mythological connection as it is the place where Karna of Mahabharata worshipped Sun God to acquire impregnable shield and an ancient temple dedicated to Uma and Karna is also situated here. Swami Vivekananda also meditated here with his gurus. Karnaprayag is a municipal board in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Karnaprayag is the point where Garhwal region and Kumaon region meets as the Alaknanda River is coming from Garhwal region and Pindar River is coming from Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state. Karnaprayag is a storehouse of natural beauteousness with lush green mountains, white gushing river and scenic excursions. Karnaprayag is located on the road to Badrinath.

Location of Karnaprayag

Karnaprayag is situated at an altitude of 788mts above sea level. Karnaprayag is located 34kms from Rudraprayag on NH58 connecting Badrinath. It is situated on the confluence of Alaknanda River coming from Satopanth and Pindar River coming from Pindar Glacier.

Places to see in Karnaprayag

Nauti Village: it is the place from where the great Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra commences. The yatra is one of the longest pilgrimage tour covered by foot into the dangerous paths endowing abundant natural beauty which can leave anyone spellbound. The yatra is done once in 12 years. The Nauti village is said to be the home of Goddess Nanda.

Bedni Bugyal and Ali Bugyal: Mundoli is the commencement point of the trek to Bedni Bugyal, Bedni Kund. Bedni Bugyal is beautiful grassland with enchanting views of the Himalayan peaks and their reflection on the still water of Bedni Kund. You can also trek upto Ali Bugyal and the mysterious Roopkund.

Badrinath: Badrinath is one of the most sacred temples of India and it is also one of the Char Dham as well. Badrinath is visited by lakhs of tourists every year. It is situated 129kms from Karnaprayag connected via NH58.

Auli: Auli is situated 96kms from Karnaprayag. Auli is popular for skiing and paragliding. This tourist destination offers stupendous views of the snow clad peaks of the majestic Himalayan range.
Chopta: Chopta is popularly known as Mini Switzerland or the Switzerland of India. The number of tourists visiting Chopta has increased in recent years. Tungnath the highest temple of Lord Shiva is only 3.5kms away from here which should be covered on foot.

Valley of Flowers: Valley of Flowers National Park can be reached by a trek of 16km from Govind Ghat. It is nestled in the west Himalayas covering an area of 87.50sqkms. The valley is entirely covered with the sheets of snow during winters and the flowers bloom here from June to October only. This place is rich in varied and unique flora and fauna. Valley of flowers national park is the home of many endangered animals like brown bear, black Asiatic bear, blue sheep and snow leopard. The valley of flowers was declared as the national park in the year 1982 and it is now a world heritage site. The valley of flowers is situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state. The virgin beauty of this valley lures the botanists, nature lovers and adventure lovers. 

Uma Devi Temple: Do visit Uma Devi Temple and Karna Temple while a visit to Karnaprayag as the place is dedicated after Karna’s name. Karna worshipped Sun God here to acquire impregnable shield.
